Viewing his vines as a personal laboratory, it’s no surprise that Julien Ferran, a trained biologist, is out front when it comes to promoting biodynamic winemaking. Since joining the family estate in Entre-Deux-Mers, Julien expanded the vineyard while preserving native plant and animal species.

Meet the Winemaker

Julien learned winemaking from his father. His professional knowledge and scientific passion allow him to cultivate the vines and understand his land. He is part of the “Renaissance des Appellations,” a group of winemakers promoting biodynamic processes and high-quality AOC wines.
In the Vineyard & Cellar

Eight hectares of the vineyard grow white grape varieties Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, Muscadelle and Sémillon. Red varieties include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Some of the Merlot plots are over 50 years old. Julien aims at full expression of terroir with minimal intervention. He uses horse-drawn plows and encourages vine growth and biodiversity with biodynamic applications such as herbal teas, silica and horn manure. Barrel aging is moderate with almost no new oak and natural charring in order to have a low impact on aromas.
