Last month, the nonprofit organization Wine Unify named VIVANT wine advisor Jordan Lynn Traylor as a 2020 Elevate Award recipient.
Wine Unify champions and promotes diversity in the wine business. The Elevate Award initiative identifies and honors underrepresented minorities working in the wine industry supports recipients’ continuing development and success.
“The selection process was quite difficult because we received so many passionate, deserving applications,” said Alicia Towns Franken, a Wine Unify board of directors member who leads mentorship. “Ultimately, we select individuals who are best able to demonstrate their need, drive and desire to push themselves further within the wine Industry. We seek to create a safe and inclusive community for all interested in wine beyond the awards through additional live mentorship sessions.”
The Elevate Award offers funding for recipients to continue their wine education as well as mentorship with notable industry professionals such as Julia Coney (@juliaconey) and André Mack (@andrehmack).
“In addition to the awards, we offer opportunities to build community and champion representation,” says Wine Unify co-founder DLynn Proctor. “We are showing people a door to opportunity that they may never have known existed for them.”
The Perfect Pairing
Studying Culinary Arts in Sorento, Italy changed Jordan’s world. Before focusing on wine, she spent the first half of her career as a chef. Merging her passion for food with wine, she says, is the “perfect pairing.”
“Jordan joined our team in early 2020 and hit the ground running,” said Preston Mohr, Global Wine Advisor Manager at VIVANT. “She is continually a top-performer and provides high-quality customer service. Through her visibility and social media presence, Jordan strives to encourage inclusivity, which is exceedingly important for the wine industry. We’re proud of her and this recognition for her work.”
Jordan currently has a Wine & Spirit Education Trust Level 2 certification and will continue her studies with support from the Wine Unify initiative. Her goal is to be just as knowledgeable about wine as she is about food, and build her profile as an expert in both fields.
She says she welcomes the opportunity to grow and learn with a group of peers that “better represent the true diversity in the hospitality industry.”
“It’s such an honor to be included amongst a cohort of amazing up-and-coming wine professionals,” said Jordan. “In an industry where I’m often not just the only woman in the room, but the only African American, I’m grateful for Wine Unify being a driving force in changing the narrative.”
Follow Jordan on her profile page to see her favorite wines and to get your spot in one of her upcoming Live Experiences.
